Band biceps curl

How to do it
- Stand on the middle of the band with one or both feet, one end in each hand.
- Arms at your sides, elbows pinned to the ribs, palms facing forward.
- Curl the hands toward the shoulders while keeping the elbows still.
- Lower slowly to full arm extension.
Common mistakes
- Elbows drifting forward on the way up: the movement leaves the biceps for the shoulder.
- Swinging the torso to launch the load.
- A dropped descent, when the braked part is where most of the work happens.
Where you should feel it
The work is felt at the front of the arm, from the elbow to the shoulder. The forearms heat up too, which is normal: they are what holds the band.
Range of motion
Curl until the hands approach the shoulders, and lower to fully straight arms. Cutting the descent short is the most common way to reduce the work without noticing.
Tempo and breathing
One second up, two to three braking on the way down. Exhale curling.
What works, precisely
The biceps brachii flexes the elbow and helps supinate the forearm; the brachialis underneath is the most consistent flexor whatever the hand position. The brachioradialis of the forearm assists.
Movement mechanics
Open-chain elbow flexion against rising resistance: the band is tightest at the top, where the lever arm is short, giving an almost inverted load profile compared with a dumbbell.

- The first biceps exercise in the library, in an "Arms" group that did not exist before this batch.
- Complements the pulling movements (rows, pulldowns), where the biceps only assists.
- Needs nothing but a band and fits in a bag.
Adapt and progress
- Easier : Hold the band higher along its length, or stand on it with one foot only.
- Harder : Shorten the length you hold, or pause for a second at the top of each repetition.
- Move on when : When three sets of fifteen go by with no elbow drift, shorten the band.
Precautions
Pain in the crease of the elbow is not the burn you are after: reduce the resistance and check that the descent is braked rather than dropped.
