Chest press machine
Muscles worked : Chest, triceps · Shoulders
How to do it
- Set the seat height so the handles sit at chest height.
- Sit down with the back and shoulders firmly against the pad, feet flat on the floor.
- Press the handles forward to full arm extension, without locking the elbows.
- Return under control until the hands come back level with the chest.
Common mistakes
- Shoulders lifting off the pad to gain a few centimetres of press.
- Locking the elbows at the end of the press, which shifts the load onto the joint.
- Returning too fast, when the braked phase is the most productive one.
Where you should feel it
The work is felt in the chest and the back of the arms, with no stabilizing effort: the pad handles that. That is what separates this machine from a push-up.
Range of motion
Return until the hands are level with the chest, no further — beyond that the shoulder travels into excessive extension against a guided load, which adds nothing.
Tempo and breathing
One to two seconds to press, two to three to return. Exhale pressing.
What works, precisely
The pectoralis major and the triceps are the movers, the front deltoid assists. The back pad replaces all the bracing work a push-up demands, which concentrates the effort on the pressing muscles and nothing else.
Movement mechanics
Horizontal shoulder adduction with elbow extension, on a path set by the machine. With the torso fixed, the variable is load rather than stability — the exact inverse of a push-up.
Benefits
- Lets horizontal pressing be loaded heavily with no partner and no bench, with fine load adjustment.
- The guided path reduces the risk of technique error compared with a loaded free movement.
- Useful alongside push-ups, or as a substitute when the wrist or the core is the limit.
Adapt and progress
- Easier : Reduce the load, or shorten the range by coming back a little less far.
- Harder : Increase the load, slow the return to four seconds, or pause in the bottom position.
- Move on when : When three sets of twelve go by with the shoulders never leaving the pad, increase the load.
Precautions
Keep the shoulders in contact with the pad from start to finish: that contact is what protects the joint on a fixed path.
