Mountain climber
Muscles worked : Cardio, core · Shoulders, hip flexors
How to do it
- Set up in a straight-arm push-up position, hands under the shoulders, body aligned.
- Drive one knee toward the chest without the hips rising or sagging.
- Put the foot back down and switch straight to the other leg.
- Hold a steady rhythm for the whole duration, breathing continuously.
Common mistakes
- Hips rising with every leg switch: the core has given out and the exercise becomes a bounce.
- Hands too far forward of the shoulders, which loads the wrist and shoulder for nothing.
- Rhythm too fast at the cost of knee range.
Where you should feel it
The breath climbs quickly, and the core works continuously to stop the hips moving. The shoulders carry the weight of the upper body for the whole set.
Range of motion
Drive the knee as far as the hips can stay still — the hips set the range, not the wish to go further.
Tempo and breathing
A steady rhythm you can hold for the whole duration, rather than a fast start followed by a collapse. Breathe continuously: holding your breath is the first sign the pace is too high.
What works, precisely
The hip flexors draw the knee toward the chest, while the abdominals and the gluteus maximus of the supporting side stop the pelvis tipping. Shoulders and triceps work isometrically to hold the high plank.
Movement mechanics
Alternating open-chain hip flexion and extension on a high-plank base, so with a closed support on the hands. It is a cardio exercise whose main constraint stays trunk stability: the pace raises the heart rate, the bracing decides the quality.
Benefits
- Raises the heart rate without moving anywhere and without equipment, in very little space.
- Combines cardio work with dynamic bracing, which neither walking nor the plank does alone.
- Scales by rhythm rather than by load, so it fits every level without changing anything.
Adapt and progress
- Easier : Slow right down, or put the hands on a raised surface to unload the shoulders.
- Harder : Raise the pace or extend the duration, as long as the hips stay still.
- Move on when : When three rounds of forty seconds go by with no hip rise, extend the duration.
Precautions
Sensitive wrists or shoulders: raise the hands onto a bench or a step, which markedly reduces the load on the support without changing the leg work.
