Treadmill
Muscles worked : Cardio, legs
How to do it
- Step on with the belt stopped or very slow, then build speed gradually.
- Pick a pace where talking stays possible but slightly breathless.
- Keep the torso upright and the gaze far ahead, without holding the rails.
- Hold the pace for the whole duration, then slow down gradually before stepping off.
Common mistakes
- Holding the side rails: part of your weight is carried, so the real effort drops while the displayed speed does not.
- Eyes fixed on the screen, which breaks the neck posture.
- Starting too fast instead of settling into the pace progressively.
Where you should feel it
Moderate breathlessness, steady for the whole duration: conversation should stay possible but not comfortable.
Range of motion
No range to set, but a stride: land on the heel, roll through the foot, let the arms swing freely from the shoulder.
Tempo and breathing
A steady, held pace rather than surges followed by recovery — unless intervals are the point of the day.
What works, precisely
The same muscular chain as walking: glutes and hamstrings propel, quadriceps absorb, calves provide the final push, and the core stabilizes the pelvis at each footfall.
Movement mechanics
Cyclic locomotion on a motorized belt. What separates it from outdoor walking is the adjustable incline: it, more than speed, raises the effort without raising the impact — a dial outdoor ground does not offer on demand.
Benefits
- Lets pace and incline be set precisely, so exactly the same effort can be reproduced from session to session.
- Incline loads the glutes and calves more without requiring a faster run.
- Independent of weather and time of day, unlike outdoor walking.
Adapt and progress
- Easier : Reduce the speed before reducing the duration: fifteen minutes held beats thirty endured.
- Harder : Raise the incline at a constant pace, extend the duration, or alternate faster segments.
- Move on when : When twenty minutes at a steady pace go by with conversation still possible, raise the incline.
Precautions
Clip on the emergency stop before starting, and never step off a moving belt.
